Lead is dangerous to our health but this was considered safe back then
Once there was a test where volunteers asked to breathe in or swallow lead and test their urine. There was no sign of danger in urines so lead was passed as clean bill of health. Little did they know that lead stays in blood and bones and these weren't tested at all.
